Olmsted Parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue
The Druid Hills neighborhood was laid out surrounding a series of linear parks designed by Frederick Olmsted, founder of American landscape architecture. Olmsted is well known for designing Central Park in New York City as well parks in other cities such as Boston, Buffalo and Chicago.
He also designed the grounds around the United States Capitol and the Biltmore Estate.
Olmsted designed his parks to follow a long stretch of land along Ponce De Leon Avenue. He incorporated six narrow public parks along the curving avenue as a way to separate through traffic from neighborhood traffic. The public parks equal a two-mile park stretch.
