Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

Callanwolde was designed by noted architect Henry Hornbostel for Howard Candler, oldest son of Asa Candler (founder of Coca-Cola).   Hornbostel studied classic architecture at Columbia University and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.   His architectural style draws upon the classic buildings from the Gothic, Tudor, and Renaissance periods.   The Calanwolde mansion has 27,000 square feet.

The name Callanwolde is derived from the Candler family's connection to Ireland.   In the 1670, William Candler was granted land at Callan in County Kilkenny in Ireland which included the ruins of an old fort or castle.   William built a manor house on the property and named it "Callen Castle" even though it was not a castle.   Wolde is an old English word meaning woods.

In 1959, Mrs. Candler donatd the estate to Emory University.   Today, Callanwolde is maintained and owned by DeKalb County and operated by the Callanwolde Foundation.   Callanwolde is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Entrance Foyer The entrance foyer is one of many areas with walnut panelling and walnut flooring.	Great Hall Most of the rooms in the mansion open onto a great hall on each floor.

The gardens have been restored by the DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs.	The estate includes two conservatories, nature trails, and gardens on twelve acres.
