The mission of the world languages program is to equip all students with lifelong skills that will allow them to communicate effectively, to collaborate, to think and to interact in a global society, and to appreciate other languages and cultures, as well as their own. Two years of the same world language are required for an academic diploma. Students are encouraged to take multiple years of the same language to enhance language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as culture and civilization.

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS)and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Standards require that teachers teach with the goal of students obtaining proficiency in a second language. While textbooks may be used, they are used solely as a resource. Electronic portfolios, videos, and voice recordings, using Audacity (computerized voice recording app), are integrated into the curriculum so that students may demonstrate their language ability. Authentic materials and realia which encourage interaction and involvement are used extensively.

Through language learning students develop literacy with a balance of informational and literary text; use their second language to access, discuss, and create content across all disciplines, and build academic language. Second language learning also prepares learners in the STEM areas. Project- or problem-based language learning with STEM content develops problem solving skills as well as critical thinking and inquiry skills.

While world language courses are divided according to high school and middle school, many elementary schools offer exploratory language classes as well.
