OVERVIEW
Ronald E. McNair Middle School is located east of Atlanta in the city of Decatur approximately five miles from downtown Atlanta where the implementation of a standards-based curriculum (Georgia Performance Standards), as mandated by the Georgia Department of Education is utilized to increase rigor and relevance in the academic program. Students at Ronald E. McNair Middle School receive enhanced reading in the content areas through a leveled library based on Developmental Reading Assessments and aligned lexile levels. In the 07-08 school year, Ronald E. McNair Middle School implemented small learning
communities with a focus on gender-based education. This program allows teachers to design and implement individual learning plans that meet the full spectrum of student needs, smaller student/teacher ratios, and more opportunities for students to engage actively in both courses and extracurricular activities. There are two gender-based houses, one all male community; one all female community; and one co- ed community. Each house will consist of approximately 300 students and is assigned an administrator, counselor, faculty and shared support staff. To support the affective needs of our students, Town Hall meetings are held weekly and are often facilitated by outside speakers.

Additionally, there are designated days assigned for professional learning within the school day. The focus of the professional learning communities is to develop tasks that reflect rigor, analyze student work, and to prioritize student learning needs based on data. The professional learning communities are established for both regular and special education teachers to implement the protocols and practices needed to achieve collaborative planning. All teachers utilize the Backward Design Lesson Plan to ensure that these best teaching practices are transferred into the classroom

    Recent Accomplishments
Received high performance ranking in 2008 Science Olympiad competition. Incorporated school chapter of FBLA.
  • McNair Middle School met the AYP criteria in 11 out of 12 categories. Our “Students With Disabilities” (SWD) did not meet the goals in Reading during the first administration of the CRCT. However, with intensive instruction during the Summer School session, eight out of the ten SWD students passed the summer administration of the CRCT. We are awaiting the final results from the Georgia Department of Education to determine our 2008 AYP status. This is the first time in the history of McNair Middle School that we have achieved these goals.
  • With the support of the Georgia Department of Education and DeKalb School System we are affecting change at McNair Middle School. We are committed to this change by increasing the academic success of our students and bridging the gap between the school and community
