| The International Center is an intake center for registration, testing, and placement of all international students new to DeKalb County. Students classified as International are students who were born outside of the United States and/or students who were born in the United States, but who speak English as their second language. Students born in Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and on U.S. military bases may register at the local schools. When the registration process is complete, including program placement, students are enrolled in their home school. |
| Placement may include one of the following programs: |

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class combined with a regular schedule for students with limited speaking abilities. |
|
|
The LAB program for students who are 13 years of age or older, with fewer than 7 years of formal schooling. |
|
|
For students in grades 3-12 with no English speaking abilities, intensive English instruction at the International Center for three weeks or more. |
|
|
To allow international students to function at an optimal level within instructional programs offered in DeKalb County Schools |
|
|
To help students quickly attain proficiency in English to attain satisfactory achievement. |
|
|
To provide for a rapid adjustment to the cultural differences in American schools |
|
|
To serve as a continuing language and cultural resource to the neighborhood schools once the students are in regular attendance. |
| The International Center's staff is multilingual. The countries represented by the staff are: Bosnia, China, Dominican Republic, France, Haiti, India, Korea, Laos, Peru, Poland, Taiwan, the United States, and Vietnam. Languages spoken are Bosnian, Chinese, English, French, French Creole, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Laotian, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese. |
| Because of their multi-lingual abilities, the International Center staff performs many duties for which they are uniquely qualified. |

Process I-20 student Visas, which enables international students to study in the United States for one year |

Evaluate more than 250 student academic international transcripts |
|
|
Translate documents in various languages into English |
|
|
Interpret for parent conferences, SST meetings and psychological evaluations |

|
Process student exchange applications |
|
|
Register more than 3,000 international students each school year |

|
Coordinate Parent Outreach and Parent Literacy programs for the local schools |
