Professional learning is defined by the Georgia Department of Education as the means by which teachers, administrators, and/or other school system employees acquire, enhance, and refine the knowledge, skills, and commitment necessary to create high levels of learning for all students.

The mission the Department of Professional Learning is to provide quality learning opportunities for all employees through systemwide collaboration to advance student achievement.

Focus

  1. Deepening the curricula and content knowledge of teachers and administrators
  2. Engaging students using research-based instructional and assessment strategies (e.g. Marzano's High Yield Strategies and the Educator's Toolbox of Strategies) and using the foundations for teaching to include classroom talk, scaffolding, questioning, collaboration, writing to learn, and literacy
  3. Using data to inform instructional decision making and to improve outcomes
  4. Creating a culture of continuous school improvement in the context of collaboration, feedback, monitoring, support, progress reporting, and accountability
