RECENT ACCOLADES
Southwest DeKalb HS Honored for Highest AP History Scores The College Board recently announced that DeKalb County's School System's Southwest DeKalb High School is being recognized as the public school with the largest number of African-American students in the class of 2008 achieving success (with a score of 3 or higher) on the Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History Exam. Southwest DeKalb High School is one of 16 high schools across the country that has been recognized by College Board's 5th Annual AP Report to the Nation for increasing access to AP among traditionally underserved students.
State School Superintendent Names Six DCSS "AP Honor Schools" State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox recently named more than 80 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools. Among those 80 were six DeKalb County high schools: Avondale High, Chamblee Charter High, Cross Keys High, DeKalb School of the Arts, Druid Hills High and Southwest DeKalb High Schools.

2009 State of the System Address Petitions Support from Local Business
DeKalb County School System's top administrator recently delivered his annual State of the System Address to a group of audience members he hoped would spring into action. With the mission of enlisting further support from DeKalb business leaders, DeKalb Schools Superintendent Dr. Crawford Lewis hosted his third annual State of the System Address in collaboration with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

Test Pilot Visits Shamrock Aviation Students
Shamrock aviation students recently enjoyed a visit from a professional who has hands-on experience with the subject of their study. Mr. Bernard Dvorscak, one of the original test pilots for Lockheed's legendary C-5 Galaxy, visited Shamrock's 8th grade students on January 29 to share with them his experiences with the huge cargo aircraft that is a workhorse of the American military.

Senior Spotlight: Lithonia HS' Brandon Stallings
DCSS is blessed with leagues of outstanding students who have gone on to pursue secondary efforts including graduating from ivy league universities, completing top-tier tech trainings, and entering the workforce. Senior Spotlight is a feature designed to acquaint you with just a few of DeKalb's many great seniors. The first of many stellar students we want you to meet is Brandon Stallings, a senior at DeKalb's Lithonia High School.

Parent Group Gets Low-Down on High-Tech Bullying
Nasty rumors, threats, taunting, embarrassing photos, fake video. In 2009, students no longer live in the age of Scott Farcus-playground bullying. As technology has advanced, so has the nature of the bully. Using text messages and social networking sites, students are experiencing what is now referred to as cyber bullying.

Midvale Students Visit King Tut Exhibit
The study of Egyptian history has long been of great interest to students across the world. Earlier this month, second through fifth grade students at DeKalb's Midvale Elementary School were given a special opportunity to antiquities first-hand. Thanks in large part to Midvale's PTA and parent donations, the students were able to attend "Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs," an exhibition at the Atlanta Civic Center.

Student Advisors Get One-on-One with New BOE Members
In the first meeting of 2009 year, the Superintendent's Student Advisory members from each DeKalb middle and high school were granted the opportunity to meet and speak one-on-one with new Board of Education Members. During the January monthly meeting, student advisory members heard from newly elected board members, Dr. Eugene Walker and Dr. Pamela Speaks as well as Board Members Zepora Roberts and Jim Redovian.

Sarah Elizabeth Andrews HS Partners with Laurus Tech Institute
Students from Sarah Elizabeth Andrews High School, formerly known as Open Campus HS, recently had an opportunity to tour the Laurus Technical Institute in downtown Decatur. The Institute, who sponsored the event, is the high school's newest Partner In Education. The students were given the opportunity to explore post-graduate career options other than the traditional two- and four-year institutions.
