McNair High School is located in south DeKalb County, GA. It is part of the DeKalb County School System.
It was constructed in 1964 and was originally named Walker High School; its mascot was the Warhawk. Walker served students in grades 8 through 12. In 1987, Walker High School was merged with Gordon High School (now named Ronald McNair Middle School).
The newly named McNair Senior High School, whose mascot is the Mustang, began serving students in grades 10 through 12. In 1996, its name was changed once again to McNair High School and at that time started serving 9th grade students, most of whom were previously enrolled at McNair Middle School. The school was totally renovated in 2006.
McNair High School was named after the African-American astronaut Ronald E. McNair, who died in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.

The Mission of Ronald E. McNair High School is to: Facilitate student growth in scholarship, maturity, wisdom, and responsibility; which will prepare them to compete in a global society.
Values
-We believe that our school must reflect a comfortable atmosphere where students feel supported in their educational pursuits and where new beginnings are encouraged.
-We believe parents and guardians must assume the responsibility of preparing children for the daily learning process.
-We believe each student has the ability to learn and be successful, and must assume responsibility for his/her own potential.
-We believe students should be actively involved in the learning process and have a variety of opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of essential knowledge and skills.
-We believe the school provides a curriculum which allows students to succeed in post-secondary programs and the work force.
-We believe teachers should incorporate various teaching and assessment strategies to ensure that all learning styles are addressed.
-We believe DeKalb County School System and our school should encourage, promote, and reinforce personal integrity and respect for others.
