McLendon Elementary School is located near North DeKalb Mall in central DeKalb County, and has served the community since 1958. Cultural, ethnic, racial, economic and educational diversity give the McLendon School an environment rich with opportunities to explore and appreciate our differences. 59% of our students are international, that is, they were either born outside the United States or English is not their first language. Thirty percent of our students participate in English Speakers of other Language classes. Students and their families represent a large variety of countries and speak over twenty-six languages or dialects. Some of the countries represented are Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Cuba, Mexico, and most recently Thailand, Myanmar and Nepal.

School hours are 7:30 am to 2:30 pm. Breakfast is served each morning from 7:00 am to 7:30 am. Conferences may be scheduled before school (7:00 am--7:30 am) and after school (2:30 pm--3:00 pm).

A dedicated staff participates in on-going staff development to ensure the delivery of sound, research-based pedagogy.

McLendon Elementary has five main goals:
  • To improve student achievement through high expectations, frequent monitoring of student progress, and staff development activities.
  • To increase reading and math achievement in all subgroups of children.
  • To provide social services (food, clothes, and living needs) and a safe learning environment free of negativity to our student population.
  • Strive to increase the present level of educational opportunities for students, staff, parents and community members.
  • To foster a culture of respect amongst our diverse student population.
