Defending champs finish a game short of title match

A diving block of Jared Britt’s penalty kick gave Marist a 1-0 victory over the Lakeside Vikings in the Class AAAA boys’ soccer semifinal playoff game at Marist on Thursday night.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie after regulation and 10 minutes of overtime to force the penalty kick situation.

Marist got the first shot and stayed one step ahead of the No. 2 ranked Vikings in the penalty kicks. Marist’s William Rafferty hit the fifth penalty kick to put Marist ahead at 5-4 with Lakeside’s Britt up next .

Britt was facing freshman goalie Vaughn Moore and sent a shot towards the right corner of the goal when Moore made a diving save and knocked the kick wide to give No. 3 ranked Marist the 1-0 victory.

Lakeside had put the pressure on in the first half missing several chances to score including a yellow card on a score that disallowed the goal and would-be 1-0 lead for the Vikings at the 19:28 mark of the first half.

The Vikings scored another apparent goal early in the second half only to have it disallowed when the ball was tipped by the goalie and rebounded back in to play where it was put back in for the nullified score.

Marist had three big opportunities in a one minute span at the 24 minute mark of the second half, but the Lakeside defense was up to the task as goalie Yonathan Arroqui and his teammates turned away the threats.

Martin Gonzalez had a nice pass from a teammate at the 3:38 point of the second half, but tripped trying to get to the ball and the two teams finished out the half to go to overtime.

Arroqui made a diving save on the left corner of the goal as he deflected the ball away with 2:32 to play in the first five minute session of overtime.

The Vikings let another opportunity slip away in the second half of overtime to set up the penalty kicks.

Gonzalez, Taylor Cardwell, Jack Abbott and Arroqui all made penalty kicks for the Vikings who finish the season at 16-3-0 overall.

DeKalb County joined the Georgia High School Associations’ soccer championships in 1968 and promptly made a statement winning seven out of the next 8 state titles. The county holds 16 boys state championships and one unofficial girls state title.

Briarcliff won the first boys’ state title in the county’s opening season in the GHSA sponsored championships in 1968. DeKalb missed out in 1969, but won titles every year from 1970 thru 1975 to prove a dominant force in soccer. Another run of consecutive titles for the county came in 1978-81.

The county teams have had three of the final four in the state championships five times in the 24-year history of the state sponsored championships. The 1988 season was the most amazing of the time period as four DeKalb teams made the final four. Redan defeated Druid Hills for the title while Clarkston claimed third and Shamrock fourth.

Lakeside leads the country with seven state titles (1970, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1997, 2008) and an overall state playoff mark of 40-19-1. Briarcliff follows with three (1968, 1971-72) and Southwest DeKalb won back-to-back titles in 1979-80. Chamblee (2008), Peachtree (1973), Redan (1988) and Henderson (1991) round out the state titleholders. Redan is 21-17-1 in playoff games followed by Clarkston (19-13-1) and Druid Hills (27-17).

The 2008 season was the first time two schools won titles in the same season as Lakeside won the Class AAAA title 1-0 (3-1 PKs) over Southeast Whitfield and Chamblee won its first title with a 2-1 victory over Westminster.

Henderson won the first ever Girls Metro Championship in 1988 by defeating fellow DeKalb rival Stone Mountain 2-1. Lakeside finished third as three DeKalb teams made the final four. This was considered the unofficial girls’ state championship.

Lakeside also leads the girls’ contingent with a 11-12 record. Twelve of the current 19 high schools hold at least one playoff appearance in their history. Martin Luther King, Jr. reached the state playoffs for the first time in school history in 2004.
