TITLE I PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

IDLEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In order to promote student success, partnerships among schools and parents are vital. Parents participate on school committees such as the Title I committee. At Idlewood, we recognize that parents are their children’s primary teachers and their support is critical in our efforts to provide a quality education to the children. In order to optimize the success of our students the following programs and meetings are planned to involve parents.

The School Council, which meets throughout the year, comprised of parents and teachers is a primary parental involvement opportunity which holds its initial meeting at the beginning of the year. Parents participated in discussions regarding data and provided input regarding the Title I policy at the October PTA and School Council meeting.

Idlewood holds its annual Curriculum Night at the November PTA meetings. At these meetings, parents receive an orientation of the Title I School-Wide Program and the school’s participation under Title I. The No Child Left Behind Act and the Parent-Student-Teacher Compact, including the parent’s responsibility for supporting their child’s learning, will be addressed. At these meetings, parents are given additional information about the DeKalb Parent Centers (an orientation for the Parent Resource Center is held at the September Back to School night). An important purpose of these meetings is the explanation and description of the school’s curriculum, mission statement, and other school/classroom policies.

In addition to Curriculum Night and other meeting opportunities, programs are offered at flexible times to meet the needs of the parents at Idlewood Elementary. These programs were planned in response to parent input. Parent input is important and continues to be a part of the planning and development of new and existing programs.

• Jump into Reading Night: (January) Provides parents with reading ideas to use at home to help their children become stronger readers and writers. Program provided for students (storyteller).

• After School Tutoring Program Orientation for Parents: (January) Orientation to the purpose of the after school program. In addition, parent will be asked to contribute ideas to improve the services offered to the students. The parents will receive strategies and ideas about how they can help their children learn at home.

• Math Bingo Night (November) provides parents the opportunity to find out what their students are learning in math. Ideas are provided to parents for at home practice.

• After School Tutoring: (February - March) emphasis is on accelerating learning for students not making adequate progress during the regular school day. Focus is on accelerating the students’ progress in
• Reading and Math “Make and Take” Workshops – Parents are provided the opportunity to make instructional games/materials that they can use at home to enhance reading and math skills.
• Strategic Training for Effective Parenting (S.T.E.P.) - three meetings will be held for parents to enhance parenting skills and to support skill building

Idlewood Elementary uses the following communication methods to provide parents with timely information about Title I programs and the academic progress of the students. Information about school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities are sent to parents in a format and to the extent practical, in a language the parents can understand.

• Thursday Courier: (Weekly) provides information to parents about the behavior and academic progress of their children. In addition, newsletters, program announcements and other school related information are sent home in the Thursday courier.

• Agenda Books: Each student in Grades 1-5 receives an agenda book to help parents know what assignments are due. Included in the book is the parent-student-teacher compact and student handbook. The agenda book provides teachers and parents with a means of daily communication about academic and behavior issues.

• Parent-teacher conferences: (4 conferences per year) provide parents with information about the academic assessments used, and the proficiency level of their children.

DISMISSAL ~ EARLY SIGN-OUT
Idlewood dismisses at 2:15 p.m. Dekalb County School System strongly discourages early dismissals, except in the cases of emergency, because of the loss of instructional time for the student who is departing and because of the disruption of the entire class. Justifiable reasons for early dismissal, as outlined in the Board Policy may include: medical or dental appointments. Any parent who comes to sign a child out between 1:45 – 2:15 p.m., will be asked to wait until dismissal time unless there is an emergency.
