Sarah Copelin-Wood was elected in 1998 to her first term on the DeKalb Board of Education. She was elected as Chairman of the DeKalb Board of Education in January of 2004 and has served as vice chair from 1999 to 2003. She is serving on the Instruction committee and the Legal committee.

Ms. Wood is a native Georgian and has lived in DeKalb County for the last 30 years. She is a student at Morris Brown College and is working to complete her Bachelor's degree. Ms. Wood has been active in her community for many years, and her activities have been focused on enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods. She is the founder and Chief Executive Director of the South DeKalb Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization created by the community in 1994 to address the concerns of citizens living within southeast DeKalb. Among her numerous activities are: PTA Life Membership; Board of Directors, DeKalb Rape Crisis Center; DeKalb Chapter, National Council of Negro Women and American Business Women's Association, Rainbow International Chapter. She is a member of the DeKalb NAACP Executive Board, is on the Sisterhood Leadership Committee of Beulah Baptist Missionary Church, and is a member of the MARTA Collaborative Task Force and Technical Advisory Committee.

Among her former civic activities, she was a member of the Georgia Department of Labor Minority Advisory Board, and a member of the DeKalb Board of Education's Growth Information and Management Community Task Force for the penny tax referendum. She is very proud of the fact that she was President of the McNair Senior High School PTSA, and Secretary of the McNair Junior High School PTA while her children were attending those schools.
